Who doesn’t love Nagar Valley? It is the prime attraction for tourists with breathtaking sceneries of the surrounding mountains. The view of four 7,000 m high peaks, i.e., Rakaposhi, Diran, Golden, and Ultra, from different focal points of Hunza makes it quite unique and memorable. Nagar Valley Pakistan is famous for its delicious fresh fruits, terraced fields, landmark monuments, and also for its changing colors in various seasons. Nagar Valley Gilgit Baltistan has been a state of equal status and holds great importance as that of Hunza. Although the valley is spread in a vast region, however, the main village of Nagar Valley is just opposite to Karimabad, i.e., across the Hunza River. Bar, Jaffarabad, Husanabad, Sikandrabad, Nilt, and Ghulmit are the major villages in Nagar.

After the Hunza-Nagar Campaign of 1889–1892 i.e., also known as the Anglo-Burusho war,  the area passed under British control and then as a vassal of the Kashmir Durbar, but was ruled by the same royal family. In 1974, Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto dissolved the Princely States of Nagar and Hunza and gave democratic representation to the Northern Areas Council, now known as the Northern Areas Legislative Council. The British wanted to expand their trade to Russia from here, but the states wouldn’t allow them to. And this is how the Nagar princely state was formed.

Nagar lies in the Nagar river valley, about five miles south-east of the junction of the Nagar river with the Hunza river just below Baltit.

The Nagar valley previously known as Broshal is situated at an elevation of 2,688m (8822 feet). Nagar Khas is the main town and the capital of the former State of Nagar. Ghulmet, Minapin, Bar, Chaprote, and Hopper Valleys are the popular tourist attractions in the Nagar region because of the spectacular scenery of the surrounding and the most intimidating high mountain peaks on earth such as Rakaposhi at 7,788m (25,561 feet), and Diran and Spantik peak also is known as (Golden peak) and several others to be discovered.

  • Rakaposhi Peak

Who doesn’t want to get lost in Rakaposhi’s world-famous snow-covered mountain? Rakaposhi means “Snow Covered” in the local language. It is also known as Dumani “Mother of Mist” or “Mother of Clouds”. 

  • It is ranked 27th highest in the world and 12th highest in Pakistan, but it is more popular for its beauty than its rank might suggest. 
  • It is located in the Karakoram mountain range in Pakistan. The location is exactly in the middle of Nagar Valley District,  Danyore, and Bagrote valley which is approximately 100 km north of the capital city.
  • Rakaposhi was first climbed in 1958 by Mike Banks and Tom Patey, members of a British-Pakistani expedition, via the Southwest Spur/Ridge route. Both of them suffered minor frostbite during the ascent to the summit on June 25. Another climber slipped and fell on the descent and died during the night.
  • The impressive ice walls of Rakaposhi 7788 m are mighty and stand tall.

  • Hoper Glacier 

Hoper Glacier is located in the US state of Montana. The glacier is situated east of Sky Pilot Mountain in the Beartooth Mountains at an elevation of 11,000 feet (3,400 m) above sea level.

  • The Hoper Valley is a scenic portion of the Nagar Valley in northern Pakistan. It is about 10 km away from Nagar Khas, the principal city of the Nagar Valley
  • Hoper Valley is the site of the Spantik and Hoper glaciers. Hoper Valley is a cluster of villages around a natural bowl at the bend of Bualtar Glacier. Opposite Hoper the white Bualtar is joined by the Barpu Glacier. This is a base camp for treks into the high, glacier-draped peaks called the Hispar Muztagh. The whole population of this valley is Burushaski speakers. Burushaski has always been a mystery for linguists. This valley has many natural resources and natural beauty but ignorance by the government and local politicians contributes to it not being realized for its potential.

  • Rush Lake 

Rush Lake is a high altitude lake located in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan near Rush Pari Peak. 

  • It is at an altitude of 4,694 meters. Rush is one of the highest alpine lakes in the world. It is located about 15 km (9 mi) north of Miar Peak and Spantik (Golden Peak), which are in the Nagar valley. 
  • We can reach Rush Lake and Rush Peak via Nagar Valley Pakistan,  the Hoper Glacier and Miar Glacier, which rises from Miar and Phuparash peaks. The trek to Rush Lake provides spectacular views of Spantik, Malubiting, Miar Peak, Phuparash Peak and Ultar Sar.
  • In winters Rush lake’s water freeze. The whole area becomes white and gives spectacular views that are beyond in description. The trek to Rush Lake can be reached without the need for a long and difficult climb. The treks provide some of the most amazing mountain views on earth. The trek to Rush Lake provides magnificent and wonderful views of Spantik, Malubiting, Miar Peak, Phuparash Peak and Ultar Sar.

What’s the prevalent language in Nagar Valley?

Burushaski and Wakhi are spoken languages of the Hunza Nagar Valley  region but English and Urdu are widely used for communication with visitors. 

Best months to visit:

The best time to visit Nagar Valley is from April to October but avoid June to August if you do not like crowds. This time is best for the introverts. The Nagar Valley Pakistan can get quite crowded during the mid-summer months as both the local and the Chinese tourists flock the place when the temperature is nice and warm.

What’s the Climate look like?

The climate of Nagar Valley remains pleasant from mid-April to the end of September. The maximum temperature in summer during the day is 13°C. The weather becomes very cold during the winter, mainly from October to end of March. The minimum temperature can be -14°C.

What’s the prevalent religion in Nagar Valley?

The religion of the Nagar Valley is Islam with 100% Shia Isna Ashree (Usooli).

How to reach Nagar Valley?

Before reaching the Hunza Bridge on the left-side of Karakoram Highway there is another road going toward Nagar Valley. Nagar Valley is with Hunza River flowing in parallel to the right side of the road. After a couple of kilometers, there is a spot where the Nagar River merges with Hunza River. The surrounding panorama of this route is magnificent, on one side is beautiful villages of Nagar and on the other side is the deep valley and snow-covered mountains can be seen at some distance.

Hotel owners are very helpful. They try to accommodate everyone, groups, couples, solo travellers etc. It has an excellent view of the Rakaposhi and other mountains. Rakaposhi view point is at 10 mins drive. Naltar valley is also close by. Around 10 km of this place there are multiple viewpoints and locations of great interest.

It’s much much better to stay in Nagar Valley because it is not touristy and one can enjoy the serenity and tranquility. Most importantly, rates are affordable and very reasonable.

Where to Eat at Nagar Valley?

When going to Hunza from Gilgit you first go through Nagar valley. If you are feeling hungry or just want to taste some local food then you can make a short break at Thole in Nagar valley to try Chapshuro. Chapshuro is one of the most popular local food items of Hunza and Nagar valleys. 

  • It is a bread with Qeema (Ground meat/minced meat) inside it. It is cooked on a large size traditional fry-pan (Tawa in Urdu).
