7 days in Hunza & Skardu itinerary: day-by-day breakdown

Day 1: Arrival in Islamabad. Overall, book a hotel in F-6 or F-7 and rest before the demanding days ahead.

Day 2: Fly to Skardu. Book the earliest flight, since afternoon cloud cancels more often.

Day 3: Deosai Plains. A full-day trip to the plateau, weather and season permitting.

  • Open roughly late June through September
  • Confirm current conditions before committing your only Skardu excursion day to it

Day 4: Drive to Hunza. Overall, this is the longest travel day on the route.

  • Skardu to Hunza covers roughly 280 to 290 km, typically 5 to 6 hours
  • Stop at the Rakaposhi viewpoint near Gilgit

Day 5: Central Hunza. So, your only full day in the valley, keep it focused.

  • Baltit Fort
  • Karimabad bazaar
  • Eagle’s Nest at Duikar for sunset

Day 6: Fly back to Islamabad. Fly out from Gilgit in the morning. Use the afternoon for Faisal Mosque or shopping if you have energy left.

Day 7: Departure. Get to the airport at least 3 hours ahead for international flights.

What you have to skip in 7 days

This compressed version means real tradeoffs. Be honest about what doesn’t fit.

  • Shigar Fort and the Sarfaranga Cold Desert: both need their own day in Skardu, which this itinerary doesn’t have room for.
  • Attabad Lake and Passu Cones: Hunza’s other major day trip, unreachable with just one day in the valley.
  • Altit Fort: a worthwhile quieter alternative to Baltit, but there’s no time to fit both.

If any of these matter to you, extend to our 10-day Hunza and Skardu itinerary instead, which makes room for all three.

Practical tips for this compressed route

  • Book both flights weeks ahead. Cancellation risk means less buffer to rebook on a tight 7-day schedule.
  • Carry more cash than you think you need. ATMs are unreliable in both Skardu and Hunza.
  • Don’t chase Deosai if the weather looks bad. With only one Skardu day free for it, a wasted trip costs you the whole excursion.
  • Accept that this is a highlights tour, not a deep dive. Seven days gets you both valleys, not their full depth.

Frequently asked questions

Is 7 days enough for both Hunza and Skardu?

Yes, but only as a highlights tour. You’ll see the core of both valleys without the depth a 10-day trip allows.

Should I visit Skardu or Hunza first?

Skardu first, since its flight is more weather-sensitive. Booking the earlier, less cloud-prone slot first reduces the risk of a cancellation disrupting your whole schedule.

What’s the biggest sacrifice in the 7-day version?

Hunza gets only one full day, meaning Attabad Lake and Passu Cones, its other major day trip, don’t fit at all.

Can I add Shigar Fort or Attabad Lake to this itinerary?

Not without extending your trip. Each needs its own day, which pushes the realistic total closer to 9 or 10 days.

How do I get from Skardu to Hunza?

By road via Gilgit, roughly 280 to 290 km and 5 to 6 hours, passing the Rakaposhi viewpoint. There’s no direct flight between the two.
