History of Baltit Fort
Baltit Fort rises above Karimabad on the moraine of the Ultar Glacier. Local accounts trace it back about 700 years. Tradition says Ayasho II, the Mir of Hunza, married Shah Khatoon, a princess from Baltistan, and she brought skilled Balti craftsmen who rebuilt the fort with Tibetan and Ladakhi touches, which is why its tiered form and wooden balconies are often compared with the Potala Palace in Lhasa. Dates for the marriage vary between the 15th and 16th centuries.
The Mirs of Hunza first lived at Altit and later moved to Baltit, which became the capital. The fort stopped being a royal residence around 1945. The Mir donated it to the Baltit Heritage Trust in 1989, and the Aga Khan Trust for Culture carried out a restoration between 1990 and 1996, its first major project in Pakistan. The fort reopened as a museum in 1996, and it has been on Pakistan’s UNESCO tentative list since 2004.
