Lakes in Swat Valley: Mahodand, Kundol, Daral and Saidgai

Compare the main lakes in Swat Valley, from easy Mahodand to the Kundol, Daral and Saidgai treks, with access and seasons.

In This Guide11 sections

The best-known lakes in Swat Valley are Mahodand in the Ushu Valley, Kundol in the Utror Valley, and the high Daral and Saidgai lakes in Bahrain and the Gabina Jabba area. Mahodand is the easiest, reached by a jeep track from Kalam. The others are summer-only, and the last two need a long trek.

This guide compares the four so you can choose by effort, season and route. It draws on our Swat guides and the sources at the end. Last checked: October 2026. Jeep rates, track conditions and trek times change, and published figures vary, so confirm locally.

Mahodand Lake

Mahodand lies in the upper Ushu Valley above Kalam, with pine forest and meadows around the shore. The name is often translated as Lake of Fishes, and trout fishing needs a licence. Fishing, boating and camping are the main activities, and summer brings alpine flowers around the basin.

The jeep track from Kalam is rough and usually open from late spring to autumn. In winter the lake freezes and is covered by heavy snow. Hire a 4×4 with a local driver, and read our Mahodand Lake guide for route notes.

Who it suits: families and first-time Swat visitors.

Kundol Lake

Kundol is a glacial lake in the north of the Utror Valley, about 19 km from Kalam. It is roughly 1.5 km long and 1 km wide, and its outflow forms the Utror Khwar. A four-wheel-drive vehicle covers the unpaved road from Kalam to Utror, a link road ends at Ladu, and the hike from there takes about four to six hours along a stream past forests and waterfalls.

The lake is accessible only in summer, and its banks are a campsite for trekkers. Hire a local guide and set off early.

Who it suits: fit hikers who want a lake day without a multi-day expedition.

Daral Lake

Daral is an alpine lake in Swat Kohistan at about 3,505 m, shaped like a giant amoeba and fed by melting glaciers. The most favoured trail starts at Gabina Jabba, where an unmetalled jeepable road ends, followed by a trek of about four to five hours. An alternative from Bahrain takes three to four hours over bare mountains, then a descent to the lake.

Access is summer-only. An ancient mosque nearby is used as a prayer site and overnight shelter.

Who it suits: experienced trekkers comfortable with remote routes.

Saidgai Lake

Saidgai, also called Saidgai Dand, is a glacial lake at about 3,500 m, roughly 1 km long and 0.5 km wide. It lies in the upper reaches of Ushirai Dara in Upper Dir District, near the Upper Dir and Swat border, and residents of both claim the area. Three trails lead to it, the shortest from Ushirai Dara at about six hours on foot, though another section of the page says seven to eight hours.

It is popular from June to August and usually snow-covered the rest of the year. Daytime summer temperatures are reported at 5 to 10°C, so pack warm clothing.

Who it suits: long-trek specialists with a guide.

Best time to visit the lakes of Swat

June to September is the working window for all four lakes. Mahodand opens first and is the safest in shoulder months. For the high lakes, wait until July. Our best time to visit Swat guide covers the valley by month.
