The best time to visit Kumrat Valley is from May to September, when the forests are green, the river is accessible and the Badogai route from Swat is usually open. In winter the road from Swat stays closed for months under heavy snow, and in the monsoon floods can wash out the main road in.
This guide uses dated reports and the valley’s published details to explain what each season is like and how to plan around roads, crowds and weather. Last checked: October 2026.
Quick answer: when to go
- Best overall: May and June for snow-capped peaks and cool days, and September for quieter roads and early autumn colour.
- Greenest: July and August, but this is also monsoon season, so keep spare days and watch the forecast.
- Crowded: Around Eid and summer school holidays.
- Avoid for most trips: December to March, when the Swat route is closed by snow.

Season by season
Spring and early summer (May and June)
Our Kumrat guide describes May and June as ideal for hiking and for seeing snow-capped peaks. Tourists mainly visit in summer for the greenery and cool weather. The Swat route is the catch: Badogai Top normally reopens in late June or July, so earlier trips usually come in from the Dir side.
Summer (July and August)
The valley is at its greenest and best for camping, but the monsoon is the main risk. On 31 August 2024, flash floods from heavy monsoon rain washed away the main road at Barikot, swept away three bridges between the Makrala and Thal areas, and stranded hundreds of tourists. A KP Tourism Authority spokesman said about 250 were rescued and the rest moved to hotels, and landslide-closed roads were expected to take almost two days to reopen. Check forecasts and keep a buffer day.
Autumn (September and October)
Our guide notes autumn colours beginning in September. Rain eases and crowds usually thin, though we could not find official visitor figures by month. Nights turn cold quickly, so pack warm layers.
Winter (November to March)
TNN reported in June 2024 that the route between Swat and Upper Dir is usually closed for five to six months in winter, with several feet of snow in December and January. Locals depend on deodar wood for heating and cooking through harsh winters, a reminder that winter here is difficult for travellers too.
Badogai Top: the Swat connection
Badogai Top links Kalam in Swat with Kumrat. TNN, in an article dated 13 June 2024, said snow was cleared early that year so tourists could cross before Eid and the school holidays, and that without clearance the trip would have been a six to seven hour trek instead of about two hours. The same report places the pass at about 3,500 m, while our Badogai Top guide gives 8,200 ft (about 2,500 m), so treat the altitude as approximate. Ask in Kalam whether the pass is open on the day.
Crowds and Eid
About 2,000 vehicles reportedly entered the valley daily around Eid al-Fitr in 2021. About 2.6 million tourists, including 533 foreigners, visited between September 2023 and August 2024. Expect busy roads, full campsites and slow jeep queues on holidays. Midweek and shoulder-month trips are calmer.
Which month should you choose?
| If you want | Choose | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Snow-capped peaks and cool days | May and June | Badogai may still be closed |
| Green forests and camping | July and August | Monsoon floods and landslides |
| Quieter roads, autumn colour | September | Cold nights |
| Crossing from Kalam | Late June to September | Confirm the pass is open |
Planning tips
- Use a four-wheel-drive jeep. The access road is unpaved, and regular cars are not suited to it.
- Book camps or rooms early for Eid and school holidays.
- Carry cash and a power bank, and tell your hotel your route and return time.
- Read our guides to Kumrat Valley, Jahaz Banda and the best time to visit Swat for nearby stops.
