The best time to visit Fairy Meadows is from May to September, when the meadow is green, the sky is usually clear and the Nanga Parbat views are at their best. From October to April, heavy snow can close the area to visitors, and the jeep track and trail may be unusable.
This guide explains the Fairy Meadows season, then shows how to plan around snow, the jeep track and weather. Last checked: October 2026.
Quick answer: when to go
- Best window: Late May to September. The standard season is May to September, and some listings stretch it to a six-month season from April to the end of September.
- Safest for the road in: July to early September, when the high passes on the way are also open.
- Cold nights: Expect cold even in summer. Nights are cold even in the warm months.
- Avoid: October to April, when heavy snowfall leaves the area closed to tourists.
Fairy Meadows season at a glance
| Window | Season |
|---|---|
| Standard season | May to September; heavy snow and closed to tourists from October to April |
| Extended season | Six-month tourist season from April to the end of September |
| Practical window | Roughly April or May to September or October, depending on snow |
The core months are consistent, and the edges vary. April can be open in a light-snow year but is a gamble, and October is closing time. Use May to September as your plan and check conditions before you pay for transport.
How to get there and why the season matters
The route is by road to Raikot Bridge on the Karakoram Highway, then a jeep up a steep track to Tattu village, then a hike to the meadow. Reports differ on the numbers:
| Stage | Reported distance and time |
|---|---|
| Gilgit to Raikot Bridge | About 80 km, 2 to 3 hours |
| Raikot Bridge to Tattu (jeep) | About 12 km, about 15 km and our guides |
| Tattu to Fairy Meadows (walk) | About 5 km; 2 to 3 hours, 3 to 4 hours |
Plan on the longer figures. Only local jeep drivers may use the track, and the gravel road is dangerous and narrow. Our road trip guide covers the drive from Islamabad, and our trek guide covers the walk.
If you come via Naran, note that the Babusar road usually closes from November to June. See our guide to the best time to visit Naran Kaghan. In the cold months, our guide says the alternative is the Karakoram Highway via Besham.
Season by season
Spring (April and May)
The meadow can still hold snow, and the trail may be wet or icy. Hotels and camps may be only partly open. Go late in May if you want the greenery without the crowds, and ask your camp what is open.
Summer (June to August)
This is the main season. The meadow is lush, and it is the time most people attempt the walk on to the Nanga Parbat viewpoint and base camp. Monsoon rain can cause landslides on the highway, so allow a spare day. Our August guide advises the same.
Early autumn (September)
Skies are usually clear and crowds ease. Nights are cold, and the season closes quickly once the first snow arrives.
Winter (October to April)
The area closes to tourists under heavy snow. Do not plan an independent winter trip, and do not rely on the jeep track.
Weather, flights and cash
- Flights: Flights are subject to weather clearance and in winter are often delayed by several days. Keep an extra day as a buffer.
- Cash: There are no ATMs or network coverage, so bring cash.
- Lodging: Wooden cottages, eco-lodges and camping sites are run by local communities, with limited electricity, mostly solar or hydel.
- Altitude: The meadow sits at about 3,300 m. Read our altitude sickness guide.
Which month should you choose?
