This guide groups Karachi’s family-friendly places by type and suggests how to combine them without crossing the city more than once a day. Last checked: October 2026. Hours, tickets and exhibit details change, so confirm before you go.

Quick answer: best things to do in Karachi with family

  • Best outdoors: Clifton Beach and the seafront, plus Bagh-e-Jinnah around Frere Hall.
  • Best for children: the Pakistan Maritime Museum, with a decommissioned submarine, a minesweeper and aircraft in a large park.
  • Best culture stop: Mohatta Palace, a restored 1927 museum in Clifton.
  • Best for older children: the National Museum of Pakistan, with Indus Valley artefacts.

Clifton Beach and the seafront

Clifton is where most visitors go for the sea. Camel rides along the beach have been offered to tourists since the 1950s, and the area is known for barbecue and fast-food restaurants. The Jehangir Kothari Parade, a seafront promenade built in 1919 to 1920, includes the Katrak Bandstand and Lady Lloyd Pier, although the sea has receded from the pier over the years.

Go in the late afternoon, when it is cooler. Currents can be strong, so keep children out of deep water, and follow local advice and any lifeguard or authority warnings. Our guide to the best beaches in Pakistan covers other options.

Allow: two to three hours.

Pakistan Maritime Museum

This naval museum sits near PNS Karsaz on Karsaz Road, and the main building stands inside a 28-acre park. Exhibits include the Daphne-class submarine PNS Hangor, the minesweeper PNS Mujahid, a Breguet Atlantic aircraft and a Westland Lynx helicopter. Opening hours and fees are not listed there, so check the museum’s official website before visiting.

Allow: two to three hours.

Mohatta Palace

Mohatta Palace is an Indo-Saracenic mansion built in 1927 in pink Jodhpur and yellow Gizri stone. It was the summer home of Shivratan Mohatta and later Fatima Jinnah’s residence, and has been a museum since 1999. Opening hours are Tuesday to Sunday, 11:00 am to 6:00 pm, closed Mondays, with a Friday prayer break from 1:00 to 3:00 pm. Read our Mohatta Palace guide for more.

Allow: about two hours.

Frere Hall and Bagh-e-Jinnah

Frere Hall is a Victorian building completed in 1865, now used as an exhibition space, event venue and library. It stands in lawns that were renamed Jinnah Gardens after independence, and visitors can see Sadequain’s ceiling murals. It has been open to the public since 2011. It is a gentle stop for families who want shade and open space in central Karachi.

Allow: one to two hours.

National Museum of Pakistan

The National Museum stands in Burns Garden on Dr Ziauddin Ahmed Road. Its collections include Indus Valley seals and statues from Mohenjo-daro, Gandhara sculptures, a Quran gallery and an ethnological gallery. It suits school-age children and teenagers. Opening hours are not fixed here, so confirm locally.

Allow: about two hours.

Karachi Zoo

Karachi Zoo on Nishtar Road covers about 33 acres, with a reptile house, an aquarium and a Mughal garden. It has also faced sustained criticism over animal welfare, including the death of an elephant in April 2023. Many families will prefer to spend their time elsewhere, and if you do go, check recent reports and current conditions first.
