Islamabad to the Mardan interchange is 131 km on the M-1 motorway and Mardan to Mingora is 112 km, for about 247 km and roughly five hours from Islamabad to Mingora. The Swat Motorway
The Swat Motorway (M-16) joins the M-1 at Nowshera. Phase 1, from Nowshera to Chakdara, opened to traffic on 3 June 2019 and cut that stretch from about three hours to one hour. Phase 2, from Chakdara toward Fatehpur, was still under construction at the time of writing. The expressway saves visitors about two hours. Check which sections are open before you travel. Public transport and flights
Air-conditioned buses run to Mingora from Lahore, Rawalpindi, Peshawar and Mardan, with local transport onward to Kalam. We could not confirm a current scheduled flight to Swat, so check with the airline before planning around one. Read our public transport guide and self-drive guide.

Less-visited routes
A 114 km corridor linking Kalam and Dir through Utror, Gabral, Kumrat and Sheringal was announced in 2019 and had received only principal approval at that time. A Kalam–Kumrat road was also listed among planned schemes in November 2025. We could not confirm the current status of either, so check with local drivers before you plan a through trip. Our Badagoi Top route guide and Kumrat Valley guide cover the existing options.
Things to do in Kalam
- Walk by the Swat River and eat trout in town. Hotels in Madyan serve trout dishes, and Kalam is known for its trout-filled rivers and boat rides.
- Take a jeep to Ushu, Matiltan and Utror in one day.
- Spend a day at Mahodand Lake for boating, fishing and camping.
- Visit Malam Jabba on the way back from Swat.
Adventure activities
Camping and day hikes are the main activities. The trails to Pari Lake and Spin Khwar are steep and difficult, with Pari reached only on foot via Izmis or Kundal lakes in about five hours. Treat these as guided routes, not casual walks, and check local conditions first.
Photography spots
The confluence of the two rivers, the Ushu forest, the view of Mount Falaksir from Matiltan and the water at Mahodand are the main subjects. Morning and late afternoon give the best light in the narrow valley. Ask before photographing people, particularly women, and respect any restrictions at checkpoints.
Where to stay
Hotels and rest houses are spread across Kalam, Ushu, Matiltan and Utror. In a busy period in November 2025 hotels and rest houses in these valleys were full, so book ahead for summer and holiday weekends. Check rates and availability directly with the hotel, since we have not verified current prices. Mingora and Madyan have a wider choice if you want to break the journey.
What to eat
Trout is the local speciality. Karahi, kebab, rice dishes, kehwa, Kashmiri chai and Swati lassi are common in Swat. Choose busy places, and follow our street food safety tips. Avoid drinking tap water; bottled water is widely sold, so carry bottled water or purification tablets.
Getting around Kalam
You can walk around Kalam town, but the side valleys need a jeep or 4WD. Agree the fare, the stops and the waiting time before you leave, and ask your driver about the current track conditions. Mahodand needs a four-wheel-drive vehicle.

Safety tips

- Roads: tracks beyond Kalam are rough and narrow, so use an experienced driver and do not travel after dark.
- Trails: The Pari and Spin Khwar trails are steep and dangerous, so use a local guide.
- Weather: check forecasts before each trip, and expect snow in the shoulder seasons.
- Cultural norms: dress modestly and ask before photographing people.
Responsible tourism
Carry your rubbish out, do not litter the river or lakeside, and use designated campsites where they exist. Follow fishing licence rules at Mahodand, buy from local businesses and hire local drivers and guides.
Emergency contacts
Rescue 1122 and the police number 15 are the standard emergency lines in Pakistan, but confirm them locally before you travel. Mobile coverage can be patchy beyond Kalam, so share your route and return time with your hotel.
