Overall, two routes lead in, and they offer genuinely different experiences.
- Via Skardu: a few hours by 4×4 across the plains, or two days if you’re trekking in. This route crosses the bulk of Deosai before reaching the lake.
- Via Astore: roughly four hours by jeep from Astore town to Chilum, the last residential settlement before the plains open up. This route puts Sheosar Lake near the start of your Deosai crossing rather than the end.
Along either route, you’ll cross two named streams. Kala Pani is shallow enough for a jeep to cross directly, while Bara Pani is spanned by both an old wooden bridge and a newer concrete one. Crossing Bara Pani on foot, with the river running underneath, is a small highlight in itself.
