A road trip to Fairy Meadows is really two journeys. The first is a long drive up the Karakoram Highway to Raikot Bridge. The second is a short, rough jeep ride followed by a walk. This guide explains the routes from Islamabad, how long each stage takes, how the jeep track works and what to check before you set off.

Choosing your route from Islamabad

Route 1: via Besham, Dasu and Chilas

This is the all-weather option on the Karakoram Highway. According to our Islamabad to Gilgit road trip guide it stays usable year-round, though it is the longer of the two road routes. Besham is a common place to break the journey. Our Karakoram Highway road trip guide covers stops and conditions along the way.

Route 2: via Naran, Babusar Top and Chilas

This route is shorter and more scenic, but it crosses Babusar Top at about 4,173 m. The pass is generally open only in summer, usually from late June or July to autumn, depending on snow. The road is steep and rough, so check its status before you commit.

Route 3: fly to Gilgit, then drive

PIA flies to Gilgit on seasonal schedules, and from Gilgit the bridge is roughly 1.5 to 2 hours by road. Mountain flights are cancelled often in bad weather, so keep a road backup. See our domestic flights guide for airlines and booking advice.

Route 4: coach to Chilas

Intercity coaches serve Chilas on the Karakoram Highway. From there you would need a taxi or local transport on to Raikot Bridge. Confirm operators and schedules before you travel, and see our public transport guide.

Where to break the journey

Chilas is the usual overnight stop before Raikot Bridge, because it is the nearest town of any size and sits about 1 to 2 hours away. Besham works well if you want to split the Islamabad leg into two more comfortable days. Set off early on the day you head for the bridge, so that you reach the meadow in daylight.

Raikot Bridge: where the road trip changes

Raikot Bridge carries the Karakoram Highway across the Indus, and it is where the paved journey ends for visitors. The track to Tattu starts here. The Tourism Department says that road is open only to local operators, so private cars stay at the bridge while you go up in a local jeep.

Ask your lodge or the jeep operators where to leave your vehicle for the days you will be away, and agree any parking fee in advance. Keep valuables with you.

The jeep track from Raikot Bridge to Tattu

The track is about 15 km long, narrow, unpaved and cut into the mountainside, and it has little protection at the edge. It is often described as one of the most dangerous roads in the world. Treat that as a reputation rather than a measured statistic. The drivers use it daily, and the real risks are the drop, the dust and the weather.

  • Time: reported at about 1.5 to 2.5 hours each way
  • Vehicle: local 4×4 jeeps only, carrying roughly 5 to 6 passengers
  • Reported fare: about PKR 12,000 to 20,000 per jeep for the round trip; sources differ, and fares are set locally and rise in peak season

Ask these questions before you board:

  • Is the price for the whole jeep or per person, and is the return included?
  • When and where will the jeep collect you for the descent?
  • Can you share the jeep with other travellers to split the cost?
  • Is there a limit on luggage?

After Tattu: the walk to Fairy Meadows

The jeep stops at Tattu village, where porters and ponies wait. The remaining 5 km on foot takes 3 to 4 hours. Our Fairy Meadows trek guide covers the walk, the altitude and the costs. For what to do once you arrive, see our full Fairy Meadows guide.

Driving advice for the Karakoram Highway

  • Start early and aim to finish driving before dark; the mountain sections are slow and tiring.
  • Monsoon rain in late July and August can block the road in the Kohistan and Chilas areas. See our monsoon travel safety guide.
  • Fill the tank whenever you can, because fuel stops become less frequent in the mountains.
  • Carry cash and download offline maps, since coverage in the mountains is patchy.
  • Check road and security updates before each leg and follow any instructions given at checkpoints.

A sample three-day plan from Islamabad

  • Day 1: Drive from Islamabad towards Besham or Chilas and stop for the night.
  • Day 2: Drive on to Raikot Bridge, take the jeep to Tattu, and walk up to Fairy Meadows.
  • Day 3: Walk down to Tattu, take the jeep back to Raikot Bridge, and continue to Gilgit, Hunza or back towards Islamabad.

Adding a second night at the meadow gives you time to acclimatise and make a day hike. See the Nanga Parbat Base Camp trek guide for the options.
