January is the coldest month across most of Pakistan and the peak of winter travel. Snow settles on the mountains and hill stations, fog sits over the Punjab plains, and the south and the deserts stay comfortable. It is also the month when Lahore could host its kite festival, Basant, though the dates have been moving.
This guide explains what January is like in each region, where to go, what to avoid and how to pack. Last checked: October 2026. Festival dates, snow and road conditions change, so confirm locally before you travel.
Quick Answer: Where to Go in Pakistan in January
January suits snow trips, the south and the deserts, and city heritage with warm layers. Murree, the Galiyat, Malam Jabba and Ziarat are the usual snow destinations, but heavy snow can strand visitors, so travel early and leave buffer days. Karachi, Thar, Cholistan and the Makran coast are at their best. Lahore and the Punjab plains are cold and often foggy in the mornings. The high Karakoram is possible but demanding.
Pakistan in January at a Glance

|---|---|---|
| Karachi | About 26 °C high and 12 °C low; little rain | City sights, coast, Makli |
| Lahore | About 18 °C high and 8 °C low; dense fog is common | Heritage, food, possible Basant |
| Islamabad | About 18 °C high and 4 °C low; the wettest month for the city | City sights, base for snow trips |
| Murree | About 8 °C high and −3 °C low; heavy precipitation (older NOAA normals) | Snowfall, short stays |
| Quetta | About 12 °C high and −2 °C low, with snow | Ziarat and a Balochistan winter trip |
| Gilgit | About 10 °C high and −3 °C low | A cold northern base if roads are clear |
| Skardu | About 3 °C high and −8 °C low (older PMD averages, 1961 to 2009) | Experienced winter travellers only |
These are long-term averages from published climate tables, so individual weeks can differ. Hunza, Fairy Meadows and other high valleys have no comparable figures here and are colder than Gilgit and Skardu at altitude.
Basant in Lahore: Dates Are Not Settled
Basant, Lahore’s kite festival, returned in February 2026 after years of a ban, held from 6 to 8 February. Official records cited 17 deaths and 160 injuries from that festival, while sources told one newspaper the toll was 21, mostly linked to kite string.
For 2027, the dates have changed more than once. The Punjab government first announced 12 to 14 March, then reports in September and early October gave a 10-day festival from 29 January to 7 February, and a report on 4 October said it might return to March. No final notification was available when this guide was last checked, so confirm the official dates before you book anything. Kite flying outside officially notified dates remains illegal. See our cultural festivals guide and Lahore guide.
Where to See Snow in January

- Swat and Malam Jabba. The ski season normally runs December to March. See our skiing guide and Swat guide.
- Ziarat. Snow is common from December to February, and roads can be slippery. See the Ziarat guide.

Roads and Passes
The Karakoram Highway and Khunjerab Pass are announced as year-round since December 2024, with the port closed on weekends, but snow can block the highway or the pass. Babusar Top and Deosai are normally closed. Allow generous buffer days, check road status daily and see our KKH guide.
Fog Warning
January is the coolest month in Lahore, and dense fog is typical. Fog is heaviest from mid-December to late January, with the worst visibility between midnight and mid-morning. Smog can overlap. Avoid early-morning drives, check flight and motorway updates, and read our fog season guide.
Events and Dates in January
- Urs of Lal Shahbaz Qalandar. The Urs falls on 18 Shaban, and the date moves about 11 days earlier each year. By calendar calculation, based on Ramadan 2027 being expected on 8 February, 18 Shaban should fall around 26 to 27 January 2027, depending on moon sighting. This is an estimate, so confirm the date. The Urs draws more than two million pilgrims to Sehwan Sharif, with very large crowds and tight security.
- Basant. See the section above.
- Ramadan. It is expected to begin around 8 to 9 February 2027, so plan February trips accordingly.
