October is one of the best months to visit Pakistan. The monsoon is over, the summer heat on the plains starts to ease and the northern valleys turn gold. It is also a month of closing doors: Babusar Top, Deosai and several high lakes shut as snow arrives. This guide shows the best places to visit in Pakistan in October, what is open, and what to pack. Last checked: October 2026. Openings depend on snow and road conditions, so confirm locally before you travel.
Quick answer: where to go in Pakistan in October
Head to Hunza and Skardu for autumn colour and clear mountain views, to Phander and the Ghizer valleys for foliage, and to Swat for mild days. Visit the high passes, Deosai and the high lakes in the first half of the month, or leave them for next summer. From mid to late October, Islamabad, Lahore and Taxila become comfortable for sightseeing as the heat eases. For the colour itself, see our guide to the top autumn destinations in Pakistan.

1. Hunza: autumn colour and clear peaks
Autumn colour in Hunza usually builds from the second week of October and continues into November, a little earlier in higher villages. The air is clear, so views of Rakaposhi and Ultar Sar are at their best. Spend a day on the forts and viewpoints in Karimabad, then add Attabad Lake and Passu. Rooms fill quickly in peak autumn, so book ahead. Start with our guides to things to do in Karimabad, the Hunza Valley travel guide and spring vs autumn in Hunza, and see best hotels in Hunza.
2. Skardu and Shigar: lakes and valley drives
Skardu is cool and bright in October. The Kachura Lakes, Satpara Lake and the Shigar valley are all good in autumn light. Deosai is only accessible until about mid-October, so go early in the month or skip it. Read about the Kachura Lakes, Satpara Lake and top places in Skardu, and compare the two regions in Hunza vs Skardu.
3. Phander and Ghizer: quiet autumn colour
Phander Valley is known for autumn colours in October and is much quieter than Hunza. It suits photographers and anyone who wants a slower stay by the lake. See our Phander Valley guide.
4. Swat and Kalam: mild days and river valleys
Swat suits visitors from April to October, and early autumn is comfortable for walks, waterfalls and drives through Kalam. Evenings are cooler, so bring a jacket. See our guide to Swat Valley.
5. Chitral and the Kalash valleys
Early October brings fresh post-monsoon air to the Kalash valleys, and roads are generally clearer than in the monsoon. It is a good time for short walks between villages and for learning about Kalash culture. Read our Kalash Valley guide and dress and photograph respectfully (see what to wear in Pakistan).
6. Naran, Kaghan and Neelum: go early in the month
These valleys are at their most reliable in the first half of October. Later in the month snow can close high roads and lakes. If you plan to travel through Babusar Top or visit upper Neelum, keep your dates flexible. See our Neelum Valley guide and Islamabad to Gilgit road trip.
7. Islamabad, Lahore and Taxila
Cities become comfortable as the heat eases, and October to November is one of the best times for Islamabad sightseeing. Lahore also has cooler days, though smog is common from October to January, so check air quality before long outdoor days. Taxila, the Buddhist archaeological site near Islamabad, pairs well with a capital stopover; see our Taxila guide. Other guides: top places in Islamabad and Lahore.
